A great album that I would've loved to love a little bit more.
Nothing else really reaches the heights of single "Delphinium Blue". Or, for that matter, any of the songs on her previous album, which is a contender for greatest album of this (still pretty young) decade.
But I'm expecting this record to accompany me for quite some time, so I'm sure my feelings on it will change.
Been trying to get into Hovvdy for a minute now, but I could never get past the emo-ish vocals.
Thrilled to announce that I've gotten over it. This record slaps.
It's got twang, it's got a sittin'-on-your-porch-recording-with-your-buddies production style, and it's sprawling double album – of which I am a documented fan.
Remember when she said this album was inspired by Massive Attack, Primal Scream and UK rave culture? Never has an album sounded less than Massive Attack, Primal Scream or UK rave culture.
This is some wild shit, but I love it so much. A double album, four years in the making. Perhaps their last one? Put up on YouTube without ads. Or purchasable/downloadable in .wav format (via a MegaUpload link!) if you go to fucking GeoCities of all places...
But it's full of brilliant, "off-kilter" (sorry) Brill Building-type pop that sounds like it's being played at the Roadhouse in Twin Peaks. Instant AOTY contender.
Standouts: "Kingdom Come", "Dreams of You", "Government Cheque", "If You Hear Me Crying".
