i never thought i would say thank you jack antonoff but... thankyoujackantonoff (pls learn from this). a fun, cute, end of summer pop album - shout out to that one tweet that said nobody else is pop starring like ms carpenter bc they were right!!! i actually enjoyed that this was all over the place genre-wise because it feels like they had fun making it, and i had fun listening!! (thank u for some great music videos too)
There’s a lot to love on Sabrina Carpenter'sShort n’ Sweet, and a lot of the record falls into place beautifully.
Carefully moving between distinct moods, the balance of the record is damn near perfect. There’s the goofy wittiness of Espresso, the vulnerability of Dumb & Poetic and the almost melodramatic romance show that’s on full display on cuts like Taste and Please Please Please. Carpenter expertly navigates the vibes, adjusting her energy and delivery to keep the record moving.
The stellar production work (courtesy of John Ryan, Ian Kirkpatrick, Julian Bunetta and Jack Antonoff) lets Carpenter's beautiful songwriting (assisted by Amy Allen and Julia Michaels) shine without taking over, simultaneously leaving ample room for her airy… More
pretty solid follow up to emails I can’t send, I think she really has managed to brand herself around fun pop music and tongue in cheek lyrics. Compared to Jack Antonoff’s recent work I’d say this is a shining star for him
Really enjoyed the 80s influence mixed with the country / various areas within pop
I think this is her best yet (+ we mostly have the Jack Antonoff effect to thank for that) but still not very interesting, perhaps a little too all over the place w/ genre, and Juno is doing nothing to beat the straight people are weird as hell allegations.
I give this album 3.5/5 I give the Taste music video 5/5.
Honestly was impressed by this record (like everyone else said, thanks Jack Antonoff for taking Sabrina to the next level). I think she can successfully venture into other pop adjacent genres like the country hit “Slim Pickins” and disco/new wave gems “Bed Chem” and “Juno”. However, it also made this album a little too scatterbrained that it lost out on points for cohesive vision. Additionally, the songwriting did feel bland or predictable on about a third of the record (i.e. “Dumb & Poetic”, “Don’t Smile” and “Sharpest Tool”). It felt more like a collection of songs, albeit mostly smart, witty, high quality pop songs.
The use of actual instruments, and synths on a pop record the way it's done in Sabrina’s Short n‘ Sweet is really nice. Breath of fresh air from the auto-tune vocals and heavily compressed records you usually see in pop.
The way I’d describe this album is: very girly girl.
Sweet, light pop music with a very pleasant voice and beautiful lyrics, exactly what the album title promises. An album without any outliers, but good to listen to.
first half drags a bit but when this hits, boy does it hit. slim pickens perfect song that it feels like kacey has been trying to write for two albums now lol
