    My father passed in 2019. I was in deep grief and mourning when a friend shared this album as a way to console and comfort me. I consider that one of the most profound gestures of empathy. For months, this served as my crutch. Listening to Memory Sketches became a part of processing my anguish and regrets. Tim Linghaus’ music sat with me on the pavement as I went through the pain and melancholy.     Cindy Lee was one of my pandemic companions. When I listen to this album, I am transported to the days of lockdown, the streets were quiet, and I can be alone with music and my thoughts throughout the day. It was grim for many, and I do not celebrate the virus and the victims, but I thrived as an introvert. I would put this music on at night with just a lamp lighting up my space. To me, the highlight is the last track. As Heavy Metal filters through the speakers, I picture a ballroom with a Lynchian atmosphere, two lovers in a round room dancing to this. It’s quite beautiful.     I still remember how I found out about Broadcast. I was a Stereolab-obsessed girl and on an issue of Select magazine from the 90s, they were compared to Broadcast. This was my introduction to them, and immediately I was hooked. Found them moodier but no less exceptional.

    It’s kind of a great big indie secret, isn’t it? Very little is known about the band, there are so many speculations as to who are ‘Alex Hopkirk’ and ‘Ronnie Lee.’ Probably just pseudonyms, are they possibly the Reid brothers? Michael Head? even Beulah has come up… there were also some news they worked at a Rough Trade store and later released as a band called Bitter Herb.
