Avant-garde, angry, and straightforward while also possessing artistry. In the early 1990s, Cui Jian used this extremely eclectic avant-garde album to express some of his inner thoughts. Since then, no authoritarian government has tolerated such voices, but as music, even if you don't understand Chinese, you will be drawn in by the instrumental performances. Perhaps it is this sense of fragility that makes these eggs under the red flag particularly rare.

Also from 1996, and also a carefully crafted work by Rock Records, Cantonese songs sound quite challenging to me in terms of lyrics, but it doesn't affect the enjoyment of the song's smooth arrangement. Aside from the jazz setup of "The Night is Too Dark," this album also incorporates strings and a club band, making it feel completely refreshing.

I heard this song in a KTV, and Lin Yilian is a well-known artist in mainland China, but this is indeed the first time I've heard this song. The soul music-style saxophone and the very reggae-like drum set immediately caught my attention: why can songs from the 90s be so avant-garde? After going back and listening to the entire album, I was convinced that this is indeed an album that was made with great care and investment, worth a try. PS: This seems to be the first time I've heard a pop song with saxophone interspersed throughout, it's fantastic.

It provides a very intimate entry point that allows us to glimpse the band's creative state and aesthetic orientation around 1996

When I first encounter a band, I will choose their first album and then listen to them in chronological order. To some extent, you will experience the changes the band undergoes as a whole and their aesthetic preferences.

This album by Cars may be a surprise to some fans, but it could also be disappointing. There are more melodic directions, and the interspersing of instruments has replaced the previous wall of noise, resulting in less auditory impact, but allowing for a greater appreciation of the conveyed atmosphere or emotions; in some ways, the information is richer. The guitar, bass,… More

I think that not only musicians and artists, but also ordinary people like us find it difficult to overcome some inherent or learned cognitive biases and fixed mindsets in our daily lives. The classification of "world music" is not politically correct, but it is undeniable that the globalization of music is quite cool and experimental. To produce such an album in the 1980s was indeed very avant-garde. I admit that many of the samples or elements are very East Asian, and this is indeed a European music work that does not only include Europe.

Love it, the drum propulsion + vocals in the first couple of songs reminds me of Yola Tengo at once, the same way they're striving to be as varied as possible in their structure in the same song, to be able to consistently draw you in.
Then a couple of songs back in the middle, the guitars create a great sense of space as well, reminding me of a Japanese post-rock band I've heard before that had no bass and relied purely on guitar reverb to create a thick atmosphere, and it gives me a similar feeling here.

Not to mention the post-rock scene, there should be very few fans in the music scene who don't like Wang Wen.

Albums on time, daring, quality and quantity, active on the national and even international scene. I can't imagine a band being more 'exemplary' than this. The other albums are of the same quality and level, this one is simply my personal favorite. The coldness and solemnity of the north is a perfect match for the loneliness, and I hope Dalian and Wang Wen are doing well!

My reaction at the time was one of broadening horizons.

That was several years after its release, when a Chinese child heard this album in an internet café. The sound effects, harmonies, and even the vocal style were all revolutionary to me. If Jay Chou gave me pleasant and fresh melodies, then Radiohead showed me that strange sounds can also be very interesting. After that, the fun began...

For those who did not live in Southeast Asia in 2000, Jay Chou is not a familiar name.

The reason this album appears in my Top 5 is that this album or this musician shaped my musical aesthetics and preferences before I turned 18. Unfortunately, he lost his former magic after 2010, but if we hadn't met in our youth, we might not have the stories that followed.

You must have albums that you still take out to listen to repeatedly even after twenty years, right? For me, this is one example.
