Sadly, this might be their weakest record to date. Still, that's more a testament to the strength of their discography rather than a critique of this one.
This might seem like the unpopular opinion, but I actually think this is Fontaines' best album yet and will break them into new territory. The appeal is much broader and hence might speak to a broader audience. I can see why current fans might not like this new sound, but I think they're on to something. Can't wait to hear it live in a few weeks!
While this may be their most ambitious project to date, I think several songs end up falling short of their potential. That said, I appreciate the grunge and 90s indie rock influences and think some of the highlights are already all-time Fontaines canon (i.e. lead single “Starburster”). Unfortunately, given the inconsistency, I think this ends up being their weakest release so far.
It's a grower album. Not really a fan at first but "Desire", "Sundowner", "Motorcycle Boy", and "Horseness Is the Whatness" changed my mind after a few listens.
I like this direction of the band but I guess they will change their sound again in the next album (I hope)
With that being said, I still prefer Skinty Fia over this.
The fourth album "Romance" has a catchy sound and I think it's a great album. "Starburster" is the strongest song on the album for me and my absolute favorite.
