Following up on the masterful An Overview on Phenomenal Nature can't have been easy, but the fact is that Cassandra Jenkins manages to outdo herself. The New York-based singer-songwriter's musical expression has been further refined. Jazzy, smooth, or to use an extremely bourgeois word: sophisticated, pop with elements of indie rock makes the '60s meet the '90s in a completely natural way. Not to mention Cassandra's singing voice, which is one of the most pleasant things you can treat your ears to right now. One of the absolute best albums of the year.
A great album that I would've loved to love a little bit more.
Nothing else really reaches the heights of single "Delphinium Blue". Or, for that matter, any of the songs on her previous album, which is a contender for greatest album of this (still pretty young) decade.
But I'm expecting this record to accompany me for quite some time, so I'm sure my feelings on it will change.
It’s not Phenomenal Nature good, which has some songs that are as close to perfect as you can get, but it’s a a comfortable space to exist in.
Jenkins is still on top form when it comes to album centerpieces too - Omakase is reminiscent of the wonderful Hard Drive while still being able to stand by itself.
At first I didn’t love it but it’s really grown on me. An Overview on Phenomenal Nature to this feels like a healing journey. Might be favorite album of the year. I don know what it feels like because it feels like everything good.
More
This reminds me of Torres but on downers. Some of the songs on this album are lovely, for example, 'Petco'. I enjoyed a lot of the interludes and ideas that made their way into the album; sudden inspiration should find its way into albums far more often.
unfortunately doesn't really match the highs of its predecessor, to me. a fine record but relatively disappointing considering my anticipation for her return.
