When I was a kid, I performed in plenty of orchestra concerts where we played movements from the same larger musical piece. My father also introduced me to the concept of a "rock opera," which I found a bit underwhelming. It wasn't until I downloaded this particular album in college that I truly appreciated the idea of an album as a fundamental unit of connected pieces that enhance and support one another.

It's just really fucking good to listen to this album all in one go. A network of recurring tones and moods and vibes. It's just very nice!!

Dark story: I went through a period of time in college where I had a room in a co-ed fraternity, but was afraid to fall asleep in my own bedroom... I'd had a hypoglycemic seizure and was almost not discovered in my room because my door was closed and my strained shouting for help was mistaken for party noise. So I started going to sleep on the couch in the living room for a few months... and this is the album I used to put myself to sleep with. I'd crank this shit up and in fifteen minutes I'd be straight asleep in the middle of some college party nonsense, completely armored up mentally in this album. For some reason, the trouble of that time never soured it for me. Listening to it today is just as serene for me as it was before it became my kind of fucked-up melatonin substitute 15 years ago. Great stuff.
