by Cindy Lee
it's very pleasing to see lo-fi indie pop back in the spotlight, away from the land of indie sleaze and returning to its gayer, kitschy, Velvet Underground-style roots. i know of Women but i never was as drawn into the music of a lot of bands of that late 00's garage rock period as i am here. it's not just about the sound - the songcraft is a lot more refined, and the echoy basement sound just increases its strange resonance rather than feeling like the primary selling point. Cindy Lee might be a fictional character but the songs are deeply sincere - this is not Ariel Pink. and the lo-fi sound elevates it out of the range of corny disney showtunes and into this very sad, meditative loneliness. the sound of just being alone by yourself and being outmatched by the world.
this is also remarkable amount of music - maybe too much? i'm not sure every song hits for me. but the project overall is a really impressive undertaking that shows how much life there still is in indie, lo-fi music that more people want to hear if given the chance.
